The regional variation showed that the female population topped in twelve districts with an exception in two districts viz. Idukki, Wayanad respectively. In the Idukki District men outnumber women by 4143 numbers, whereas in Waynad, only 1927 men are more than women. In Malappuram, and Kannur, more than 1-lakh women outnumber men.

If we analyze the female growth rate (1991-2001), it varies from 5 to 19 percent. The maximum growth rate was observed in Wayanad (19.19) followed by Malappuram district (17.76). A distinguishing feature noted was that though the proportion of males was higher than the counterparts in Wayanad district, the female growth rate was highest in this district. This may be due to immigration of female laborers to Wayanad, from other districts or other neighborhood states. Minimum growth rate falls in the Pathanamthitta district (5.23) and Idukki district (5.64) respectively. This could be perhaps, in Pathanamthitta district the total population growth is low with 12.32, which reflects in female growth rate too. Whereas, Idukki is a backward district economically and geographically varied, which results in low density and low population.
