Make them speak, make them realise that they are not alone in their suffering, unlock the cultural lock in their attitude, were among the important thoughts brought forth by Dr. Mallika Sarabhai at the launch of KSWDC’s Gender Awareness Campaign on 6th July, 2011 at Planetarium Auditorium, Trivandrum. A documentary titled Unarthu Pattu: A song of Awakening, directed by Yadavan Chandran, Darpana Communication was also released in the function.
Dr. Mallika Sarabhai further added in her Keynote address at the function that Kerala hold a position of mark in the world, if half of its population cannot speak. She was also horrified at the fact that the highly educated women in Kerala are totally disempowered in their real life. They are made silent and swallow suffering. The silence , Mallika said was because ‘each one of them is locked in their own suffering because they think they are alone’.
Stressing on the need for women empowerment, Dr. Mallika Sarabhai said that ‘a disempowered mother cannot bring an empowered individual.’ So, the responsibility to empower the women lies on the shoulders of all irrespective of their gender and other social constraints. A joint effort is needed to bring the transformation that would contribute to the health and happiness of our society.
